Treadmills

Here are some reasons you might consider using a treadmill to get and stay in shape above and beyond the standard reasons for being in good shape (like feeling good).

  • Treadmills make it easy for people of all sizes to get off their duff and exercise. A good treadmill will have an extra lond treadbelt that accomodates the tallest person. Maybe not Robert Pershing Wadlow who measured in at 8′11.1″ as the tallest person in history, but for everyone else you can expect a quality treadmill to accomodate you.
  • What good would a treadmill be without a decent display, one that shows your time, calories burned (I never understood how this worked), distance, speed, pace and heart rate?  If you are a stat freak like me, this is good stuff.  You can track this information over time and see if you are making progress.
  • Heart monitor. That’s right, good treadmills will include a built in heart monitoring system. Great treadmill setups will have the heart monitor control your workout - how is that for fancy? It makes sense that your heart rate would control the intensity of your treadmill workout. Your exertion level can be controlled by two options on the treadmill, speed and incline.
  • You don’t need to be the one to come up with a treadmill workout. Most good treadmills have a number of preset programs in addition to the capability of letting you, the dear exercisee (is that even a word?), program your own workout.
  • Good treadmills aren’t cheap - both in terms of price and quality. You can expect that a treadmill is going to weigh a few hundred pounds and provide a stable solid feeling. Double packed bearings with institutional sized rollers will keep your treadmill running for a long, long time.
