Another Long Weekend Run

Long time readers (all of 3.5 months) know that I am training for the Robie Creek half marathon coming up in April 2007.  My training has consistented mostly of short weekday runs and one long weekend run.

This past Sunday, I ran for 2:15:00 (actually, 2:14:57) and covered about 15 miles.  I felt better than when I ran for 2 hours a couple of weeks ago.  Make no mistake, I was tired after this run.  No doubt about it, I was whooped.  But unlike the last long distance run, I actually felt relatively good throughout that run.  I started to feel a little weak after running for 1:40, previously, I felt weak at the 1:00 mark.

Also, the weight loss is going well. I weighed into at 174.0.  This weekend showed a large fluctuation of weight - on Saturday, I weighed in at 172.8 lbs.  By Sunday, I weighed 175ish.  But who cares?

Lose 2 Pounds In 2 Hours

What follows are the exact steps to lose 2 lbs in 2 hours.

First thing you need to do is weigh yourself in the morning before you eat or drink anything. Make sure to do this after using the bathroom and with as little clothes on as possible - or naked. This will be your baseline weight.

Next, eat a heaping bowl of Cheerios with 2% milk. Follow that with 12 ounces of water.

Get some running clothes on.

Go outside and run for 2 hours without stopping.

Come home, go back inside, strip off your running clothes and running shoes. Get back on the scale you used for your baseline weight and notice that the scale reads 2.4 pounds less than when you weighed in first thing in the morning - weight loss magic.

Before you get all huffy and think that this is something I recommend you do, I’m not recommended this. Besides not being a “health professional”, I know that this is just a temporary weight loss that is not sustainable. Trust me when I tell you that I couldn’t do this routine day in and day out.

All I’m really doing here is telling you what happened to me today. This was more a curiosity experiment than anything else. My 2 hour training run for the Robie Creek half marathon was brutal today. I was dragonbutt after about the halfway mark.

Sidebar your honor: dragonbutt is from the more common term “dragging butt” which loosely translates into hurts like hell.

Like I said, I was a hurting unit on the run. Just past the halfway mark, one hour out, I felt whooped. I could barely lift the old legs and plop them down in front of the previous step. I knew that if I stopped to rest and recover there was no way I was going to get going again. I grinded my way home - thank goodness the run was along the flat Boise greenbelt.

The pain I felt was similar to what I have heard about the P90X workout. The P90X website has a fitness test page that they recommend you use before purchasing their product. That should tell you a little something about how tough the program is. (Great p90x review, Savy).

Anyway, I’m done. I’m going to chug some water down and see how much of that 2.4 pounds I can gain back

No Exercise And Losing Weight

That is what has been happening; I have not been exercising and have continued to lose weight.  Not sure I can explain what is going on, but as of today I am 178.2 pounds per the digital scale that currently resides on our bathroom floor.

The no-exercise routine is not by choice.  About a week ago, I started to pick up the flu my wife had.  I had a cough and was starting to spike a temperature.  I went to the doctor within the first twenty hour hours and received a prescription that helped a lot.  Also last week, we moved.  Moving from one house to another doesn’t leave much time for anything else.  To top it off, I strained a muscle on the left hand side of my back - I was pretty much worthless for moving this past weekend.  Talk about bad timing.

But still, I have lost weight and have not been exercising religiously as I was previously doing.  I can speculate that the change in my routine is what did it.  But one other thing to consider is that I seemed to have leveled out on my weight loss effort.  I really wasn’t losing any weight this month until just recently; maybe my body was adjusted to the current weight.  Since I have continued with the good habits I have established using 30 day goals - like no candy bars, no eating after dinner, exercise every day (haven’t followed this very well recently), 64 ounces of water; maybe by body just continued on with where it was already going.  As you can plainly see, I don’t know why I am still losing weight, but I’ll take it.

All of this talk reminds me that I need to think of another thirty day goal for the month of March.

Lose Weight Every Day

To lose weight, you need to do something about it everyday.  Take me for example.  On Valentine’s Day I did nothing related to losing weight, really.  We shared a chocolate fondue for dessert with strawberries, pineapples and sponge cake (yummy).  No exercise, nothing.  Yesterday, instead of the whole fang dang family going to the local YMCA, just my youngest son and I went there and played basketball.  No real athletic output involved.  Though I do consider the time with my son more important than the erg workout that I was planning.

As a result, I weighed in at 181.8 lbs this morning.  Don’t forget that I have a new digital scale, hence the reason I am showing results out to the tenth of a pound.  Now I need to get back on the wagon and do something everyday to help lose weight.

I brought my workout clothes with me today so I can go for a run after work.  Sometimes it is to easy to drive home after work and “relax”, eat dinner then “relax” some more and before you know it you are “relaxing” yourself into not exercising.

A little over a week ago I setup a mini seven day goal of no desserts and no snacks, period.  I completed that goal successfully as of Valentine’s day.  Last night as I was munching on chips and reflecting on my successful completion of the mini goal, I couldn’t help but notice the irony of my behavior.  Here I was all proud and happy about my accomplishment and what was I doing to reward myself?  That’s right, snacking.

I’m not going back on the no snack/no dessert regime, but I am going to cut back on snacking specifically for the remainder of the month.  Dessert in moderation is fine, but seeing that I have no control in the snacking department, I need to cut myself off from the goods.

Top 5 Reasons For Losing Weight

These are my reasons, they can be yours if you want.  Just don’t be offended when the word “I” is used often.

1) More energy. Think about this one. That extra weight I am carrying around, about 21 pounds as of this morning takes more energy to move around. The fact is that I am lazy; I don’t want my body to work harder than it has to. Which leads me to the next reason.

2) Don’t die before my time. I suspect that if I don’t get my weight down, I am going to die earlier than if I might if I wasn’t carrying so much weight around. I know there are examples everywhere of relatively healthy people dying all the time at a young age. The best example I can think of is the runner Jim Fixx. He died at the relatively young age of 52 from a massive heart attack after one of his daily runs. A lot of people thought that running had to do with his death. There is also information that says that cholesterol had blocked a majority of his arteries. I don’t know about his eating habits, but his family history revealed that men in his family had poor health.

3) Look better - for my wife. I look back at some of the pictures we have when we were newlyweds and notice a change. I know, I know, I’m getting older and there are some things I can’t change. But I can do something about my weight and I plan on doing so.

4) Keep up with the kids. I have two teenagers at home - a nine year old and an eleven year old. Both of these two boys are growing. In the not too distant past, my youngest and I went down to the local high school track and we took turns running a lap - 400 meters. My time was 1:36, his time was 1:41. I would like to think that I could run faster than that, and I know I could. But I also realize my son is only going to get faster. It’s not so much about the running and being faster or even keeping up with my children. It’s more about being able to do outdoor, athletic activities with the family. I don’t want to be huffing and puffing on a hike.

5) Get rid of B.O.B. - Belly Over Belt. No offense to the Roberts out there. I just want the old clothes to hang on the frame instead of the old belly hanging over the belt line.
