Still Losing Weight

Just because I haven’t been diligent about writing doesn’t mean I haven’t been losing weight.

I have.

It’s just that I have been sick for a week+.  I have some “crud” that is running me down.  I feel hot, tired and worn out; not a good way to be.

The one benefit about being sick is that I don’t feel like eating :)

If you are like me, you appreciate before and after pictures to motivate yourself. Let me quote and highlight what I think the essense of her success

After 13 months of livin’ la vida low-carb, Darleen lost a grand total of 75.5 pounds! That was about 5-6 pounds per month (just a little more than a pound a week!) that she credits her desire to stick with her commitment.

Why I Weigh The Way I Do

Hear me out.

That 167.4 lbs that I weighed last week seems to be a fluke. I’m fine with that though.

I thought it was strange that I lost 3 pounds overnight. I did a difficult bike ride the night before, so I figured that I might lose a little weight, just not 3 pounds though.

What followed wasn’t surprising either. I gained it right back. The next day I weighed 169.0, then 169.4, then … hold on to your hat for this one, 171.6 lbs. Not sure how that happened. And today I am at 170.2 lbs.

One thing I am more aware of now is how what I eat really does impact how much I weigh. In my previous life, i.e. - before the lifestyle change, I thought nothing of eating what I wanted when I wanted. My thinking was “who cares, I can lose weight whenever I want”. With that thinking, there was never a serious effort put into reducing my weight and living a healthier lifestyle. Mind you, my health wasn’t that bad, it just wasn’t that great either. Not until my father came to visit over the Thanksgiving weekend, 2006 did I realize that I needed to do something RIGHT NOW.

I love my dad. I don’t like his health. And I don’t want to be in the shape he is … ever. When my father was visiting, we went for a very short walk around the neighborhood. He was sweating like a horror in church in no time. I could see myself becoming my father (and it’s not like I wasn’t already). And in an instant, I decided to change. Yes, in an instant. On November 30th, 2006, I started on what has been a five and a half month journey to better fitness.

So here I am now, 20 pounds lighter and still losing weight.

I Did It

Almost five and a half months after I started, I am at my goal of losing 23 pounds.  The only difference is that it didn’t take 13 months like I originally planned for.

I really had no idea how I was going to lose weight, I just knew that I had to lose weight.  And since I wasn’t sure about what to do, I started with “baby steps” - thirty day goals that I could actually stick to and complete.  And I know from previous life experiences that I need to set another goal, something that truly stretches my commitment.

I Lost 20 Pounds

And I don’t know where they went. Can you find them?

Just kidding. Today was the first day I weighed less than 170 lbs since I started on this journey about 21 weeks ago. Back then, I weighed 190 pounds, today I weigh 169.8 lbs.

To be honest, I am a little skeptical with those results because yesterday I weighed 172.8 lbs. Yesterday I went for my second mountain bike ride for the year, a two and a half hour ride through the foothills of Boise - maybe that’s why I weigh 3 less pounds today then I did yesterday.

I guess I should also mention what this month’s 30 day goal is. No desserts for the month. Last month I did 50 push ups every day with the exception of the very last day of the month. I also continued my 100 sit ups every day. But guess what, I haven’t continued. I’m a little burned out. It’s time to experiment and am looking at using this Tim Ferriss’ idea for strength training.

I did one set of 10 push ups as slow and smooth as I possibly could. While I didn’t crumble at the end, I could feel my muscles working hard.
