My Version Of Restless Leg Syndrome

Went running today. Went for a long run, a very long run along the Boise Greenbelt. This training run was and will be the longest run I do for the Robie Creek Half Marathon coming up on April 21 2007. I ran for 2:29:28.41 - how’s that for detail (cough*anal retentive*cough)?

Awhile back I wrote about losing 2 pounds in 2 hours by running for 2 hours. I weighed in bofore and after today’s run and lost 4 pounds from my two and a half hour run, from 175.2 lbs. to 171.2 lbs. As I have mentioned before, this type of weight loss isn’t expected to “stick”. I can alomost guarantee that today’s weight loss won’t last long, I have already drank 30+ ounces of water and eaten a decent sized lunch.

Getting back to the title of this little blurb, restless leg syndrome. Often times after an extreme exercise effort like today’s long run, my muscles will twitch when I am just sitting down or at night when I am sleeping. My verison of RLS includes the calf muscle being “sucked” in when I touch in. It’s a wierd sentation when I touch the back of my calf muscle and my leg responses by pulling in the muscle. Like I said, this is my version of restless leg syndrome and not the official version which is actually a neurological disorder.

The Fastest Mile

At least for me in recent history.  I ran a couple intervals this evening down at the local high school track.  2 x mile in 6:52 and 6:17.  Nice.

The Big Robie Creek Run

You must think all I talk about is running the Robie Creek half marathon. Looking back at my recent posts, I would have to agree with you :)

Yesterday, I, with a few co-workers, ran the uphill portion of the race course. We started out at Fort Boise, ran the pavement (about 3 miles), then the uphill portion of the race on the dirt road (about 5+ miles). The run went very well for me. For comparison, during last year’s race, I took 1:26:33 to make it to the summit which including some walking near the top. Yesterday’s training run took 1:18:38 - whoo hoo. Armed with this information, I had to figure out what my expected time would be given the split reading at the summit. If I am like other runners from last year that took that much time (or that little time depending on how you look at it), I can expect to complete the run right around the 1:50:00 mark.

Another co-worker of mine, one who didn’t run with us yesterday, is doing most of his training on a treadmill. While I don’t think I could use a treadmill on a regular basis (even though I can sit on a erg all day - go figure), he has been pleased with results to date, mainly because he can get an intense workout in a short amount of time.

Today’s exercise includes the already completed 100 sit ups and the planned run with the dog.

Robie Creek Training Run

A bunch of us are going for a training run tomorrow that covers the uphill portion of the Robie Creek half marathon.

I am shuttling my car half way up the hill so I can minimize the downhill running. We will begin the training run at the starting line at Fort Boise, run the road to the bottom of the hill and run the dirt road to the top. That’s where the run for us finishes. That covers about 8 of the 13.1 miles that make up the race. During last year’s race, I took about 1:26:00 to get to the peak. I suspect tomorrow’s training run will take about that much time.

The hardest part on the body will be the descent back down to the car. The knees and quads aren’t going to be up for a hard pounding. I’m planning on walking the steepest parts. No need to abuse the body more than it needs.

Robie Creek Half Marathon

If you are like me, you tried to register online for the 2007 Robie Creek half marathon.  And if you are like me, you haven’t been able to do so.  Frustrating to say the least when the web site setup to register participants for the race can’t handle the number of visitors.  Hitting the “refresh” button isn’t helping the cause either.

Have you been able to get through to register yet?  Leave a comment.
