At least mine anyway.

This is about 5 minutes better than last year.  Here’s why.  I trained less than last year, 3 - 4 runs a week, I weigh less than I did last year by about 5 pounds, and followed my heart.

By follow my heart I mean I used my heart monitor to make sure I stayed below (or there abouts) 180 bpm. I think that made a *big* difference.

I did NOT bonk at the 10.5 mile mark like I did during the previous two Robie Creek Races that I did.

Snow On The Robie Creek Course

Do you know?

I’m running the Robie Creek half marathon next week and want to know if I will be running in snow?

I haven’t been up to Aldapa Summit this year on a training run to check it out.  Only a few weeks ago, the TV news mentioned crews were going up to plow the summit - that was March 18th.

I know we have had snow in the hills since then and I am hoping that it will be clear by next weekend, but it has been cold around here, most days the temperature is below freezing in Boise.

The only positive is that the temperature is supposed to warm up significantly this weekend; today 58F, Saturday 70F and Sunday 75F.

Leave a comment if you know the status of the snow conditions at the summit.

Robie Creek 2 Hour Training Run

.. that’s what I did a couple of days ago along the Greenbelt here in Boise on a beautiful early spring day.

2 hour run

Above is my heart rate for the 2 hour run.

A few things to note … the first mile or so - not sure why it shows my heart rate so high.  I have noticed that often, the beginning of a run the heart rate is elevated then settles into a lower rate.

To be honest, I don’t believe it.

The other thing to notice is that gradual increase in heart rate over time.  What you should know is that I kept my effort consistent throughout the run as best I could … with the exception of the full stop I made at the one hour mark.

Right where I marked the chart - at 12.4 miles, 166bpm is where I stopped at a cross walk.  I was absolutely beat at that point and could barely get started running again.

Next thing.

Just finished a 30+ minute run that included something I haven’t done in probably 20+ years - run a sub-six minute mile.

At the Boise high school track, I did a mile (1,600 meters) in 5:56 - 1:33, 1:30, 1:27, 1:26.

Robie Creek Training 2008

Stepped up the training effort for Robie Creek.  I actually ran every day last week, not much mind you, but I did make the effort to run for 20-30 minutes each workday.

One day, I put in an interval around the Boise high school track, 1 x 1600 meters in 6:03 - probably the fastest mile I have run in many, many years; though a far cry from my glory days in high school when my PR was 4:26.  That was 20+ years and 30+ pounds ago.  Oh well.

Today I did my weekly long run along the Boise greenbelt, 52:30 out and about 50:00 back for 11.56 miles - yes, I am being a techo nerd when I report those numbers - which I can do know that I am the proud owner of a Garmin 305 forerunner.

I measured my weight after today’s run and I was 2.4 pounds lighter than the morning weigh in.  Probably means I was dehydrated after today’s run.  I have been pounding the water down trying to keep hydrated, doesn’t look like I did enough water hydrating today.

Robie Creek Training Again

That’s right, I’m back on the Robie Creek Half Marathon training wagon again.  And like last year, I have a half-baked training plan that basically has me adding 10 minutes each week to my long distance run.  For instance, yesterday I ran for 1:50, the week before 1:40, the week before that 1:30.

This year, I am going to break up that plan with a decent distance run in the hills.  Next week, I’ll plan on a hour plus long run in the Boise foothills.

The only wildcard in the whole operation is that my left knee hurts after these long runs.  Might be old (older) age kicking in or a old ski accident aggravating me.  Who knows.

I can tell that I haven’t gotten serious about losing weight yet this year.  My extra curricular eating activities have not been curbed.  When I say extra curricular, I mean the eating I do in between meals.  A little snack here and there - while my weight hasn’t really gone up, it certainly isn’t going down.  Time to start facing my demons and go on a cold turkey run - no in between meal snacks.
