10,000 Meters Maybe More

… reminds me of a song with the lyrics, “10,000 people maybe more”, or something along those lines.

I digress.

Busted out a 10,000 ergometer piece at the local YMCA.

41:55.2, 2:05.7 / 500 meters, 21 strokes per minute.

8:27.4 22 2:06.8 2000m
8:24.6 22 2:06.1 4000m
8:23.7 22 2:05.9 6000m
8:24.1 21 2:06.0 8000m
8:15.5 22 2:03.8 10000m

I think I am realizing (once again) that I actually have to do something if I want to lose any more weight.  Surprise!  And one of those things is exercising.

In the winter, I find it easiest to go to the Y to workout.  I have noticed that I get my most weight loss to occur when I exercise in the evening - especially after 8PM.

This is all anecdotal, but it seems to be a theme with me.  Even in the summer time when I go for an evening mountain bike ride and get home late … usually the next day I wake up an weight in a pound or less than the day before.

January 2008 looks like it is going to be one of those weight “maintenance” months - no real change in my weight for the month.

Hiking With My Brothers

Spent a few days with my two younger brothers hiking the mountains south of Mt Rainer near Goat Rocks in Washington state. Good times.

Peter and I started at the Packwood trailhead and hoofed it up to Lost Lake the first night. It was about a 8+ mile hike that ended around 6:30 PM (we got a late start at 1:30PM). Any later and the sun would not have been out and keeping us warm. I was sweating like a dog from Packwood lake for the 2 very uphill miles that we did at that point. I should mention that the weather was outstanding - nothing like have great weather for hiking and camping.

The second day’s plan was to hike from Lost Lake to Packwood saddle (5.3 miles) then up to the Pacfic coast trail and across the snow fields of Old Snowy Mountain. Beautiful scenery along the PCT (as it is referred to). We saw a few mountain goats. What I find absolutely fascinating is seeing where rivers actually start. It was very apparent that the snow fields were melting into creeks.

Like most of our camping trips, not everything went as planned. In this case, as we were hiking at just about the highest evelation and crossing a steep rocky slope just prior to Old Snowy mountain, the sole on the hiking boots I was using ripped off to the end of the toe box.

I used Photoshop to draw a green line along the side of the mountain to give you some perspective on where we hiked and where my boots decided to give up the ghost. Old Snowy Mountain is the peak on the right side.
Here’s a closer picture.

At this point I made the executive decision to turn around and head back instead of continuing on to our planned rendevous spot with our youngest brother. Call me a wimp, I don’t care - I’ve got a family. It was five o’clock and I wasn’t interested in having any hiking issues while crossing a steep snow field late in the day.

Thank goodness for cell phones. We called our other brother and told him to meet us at Packwood lake. We meet up with him early Saturday afternoon and layed around on our sleeping mattresses talking about “things”.

Like I said, “good times” and we plan on doing a hike in Idaho for 2008.

Keeping Up The Pace

Yes, I have been exercising every day this month and no, I haven’t lost any weight this month.  Seems my weight loss efforts are in “hovering” mode.  What is it that had me losing 4 pounds a month for 5 months straight and now I can’t shake another pound off to save my life?

Am I at my ideal weight (~165 pounds)?  Have not been religious enough in my efforts to lose weight?  Do I need to actually go on a diet and restrict what I eat beyond not eating after dinner?  What?

I plan on being consistent in my exercise effort through the end of the month (even though I am going on a backpack trip around part of Mt Rainer in a couple of days).  I think it might be time to up the exercise effort - my preferred way of losing weight instead of dieting.  I have been considering purchasing a single speed bike for commuting purposes and this might be the justification to do so.  If I can only convince my wife …

30 Day Weight Loss Goal

It’s that time of the month - time for another 30 day weight loss goal.

I’ve come to the temporary conclusion that my thirty day goal needs to be consistent throughout the month.  In other words, it has to be something I do every day.

For August, my goal is to exercise every day of the month.  This is the same goal I had for January 2007.  This presents a challenge since I have plans for certains days of the month that might make it difficult to complete - just means I have to plan ahead.

For the first day of August I … drumroll, please … ergometer - surprise!  10km  in 41:59.5, the first 5km in 21:20 and the last 5km in 20:39 averaging 2:05.9 for 500 meters at a rate of 23 strokes per minute.

8:41.9 2:10.4 22 2000m
8:35.2 2:08.8 24 4000m
8:40.7 2:10.1 23 6000m
8:14.6 2:03.6 23 8000m
7:47.1 1:56.7 24 10000m

I have an epic mountain bike ride planned for tomorrow through the Boise foothills.

Losing Weight By Exercising In The Evening

That’s what has worked for me and it can work for you.

I’ve been losing weight for over seven months now and have lost about 25 pounds in that time.  My latest goal has me losing an additional 10 pounds in the next five months.

The latest effort to lose weight has not been as easy for me as losing the first 25 pounds.  Since I have some history to use for reference I thought it would be worthwhile to review what has worked for me.

The “big three” are: (1) no eating after dinner, (2) drinking more water, and (3) exercising.  The first two are fairly straightforward, its the last one that I am going to comment on.

Let me say that all three of those efforts are tied together.  Drinking more water is critical for exercising, also drinking more water makes me feel full and not want to eat a lot of food.

My experience to date with losing weight and exercising indicates that the best time to exercise is in the evening.  Combined with not eating after dinner, this routine has helped me go from 190 pounds to 165 pounds today.  And here’s why I think this works for me.

Exercising in the evening, in particular after dinner, combined with not eating after dinner, sets your body up to burn calories while you are sleeping.  If you do this right and don’t over exercise, you will have a great sleep and typically wake up weighing less than you did when you went to bed.

I hate to do this, but I’ve got to throw out the fact that I am not a medical profession and am simply relaying my experiences and opinion here.  There, got that out of the way.

I’ve exercised too hard in the evening and didn’t eat after that and prior to going to bed.  Guess what happened?  I couldn’t get to sleep and found myself staring into the refrigerator at midnight looking for a large quantity of food to consume.

I use to be a big fan of exercising in the morning.  That worked well when I wasn’t trying to lose weight.  After morning exercise, my body was all fired up and ready to go.  The only problem with early morning exercise is that I would find my self famished later in the day.  And you know what happens when I am hungry, I eat.

And not just eat a little, I would eat enough to stuff myself - or at least that is how I felt when I finished.  Have you ever noticed that when you feel starved and feed yourself, you go beyond eating comfortably and make sure that you are full?  Unless you have the will power to not do that, then welcome to my little world.
