Mensfitness was kind enough to come up with 100+ ways to get rid of your belly fat.
Here’s a few that aren’t so obvious:
Exercise blind.
When you’re using the elliptical trainer, try letting go of the handles and closing your eyes. (Be careful!) Without the visual feedback, your core muscles will have to work harder to keep you balanced, burning more calories.
Smash your dinner plates.
And buy smaller ones. That way, even if you fill your plate to capacity, you’re ultimately eating less than what you would likely pile on your existing platters.
Hit the weights.
If you’re lazy, it’s not as bad as you think—just 10 minutes a day of lifting, three days a week, will help. Harvard research shows that 30 minutes of weight training per week has a greater reduction on waist size than almost any other variable.
Eat your biggest meal of the day after you lift.
It takes calories to digest food. And researchers at the University of Nevada found that it takes 73% more calories to process that food after a weight-training session than if you hadn’t worked out at all.
Brush your teeth more often.
In a recent Japanese study of 14,000 people, researchers found that men who brushed their teeth frequently were leaner than men who did not. Thank that minty-fresh flavor, which may make you less likely to snack between meals.
Buy a TiVo.
And only watch the shows you record. By fast-forwarding through the commercials, and watching only the shows you care enough to set a season pass for, you can cut your TV viewing—and the amount of time you spend on the couch—by more than a third.
Pretty cool, huh?
Lot of psychological stuff in there (like the teeth brushing thing).
So far, so good.
Went to the Y tonight, sat myself down on the ergometer and rowed for 10km.
Took me 41:43, about 2:05 per 500 meters at 23 strokes per minute.
Of course, have no idea if this is going to help me lose weight or not. I know from experience if that I am consistent about exercising everyday, I will lose weight. Period.
Crap.
I haven’t been faithful to my weight loss efforts – and it shows.
Have gained back and seem to be keeping about 10 pounds that I do need to get rid of. Time to start a thirty day challenge again. For December 2009, I am going to exercise every day. Last night (1 December) I went running at 9:50PM for 20 minutes to make sure I got my exercise in for the day.
The Robie Creek half marathon in Boise Idaho came and went – without me.
That’s right, I opted out of this years race. Why? Training – or lack there of – and being sick for a week at the end of March, beginning of April.
Instead of showing you my results this year, I have some pictures and videos from the 2009 Robie Creek half marathon to share.
I have video from the start of the race and some pictures and videos at the 4 mile mark on the race course. This year’s Robie Creek results should be available soon.

Did you run this year?

How did you do?
Big run today along the Boise greenbelt training for the Northwest’s toughest marathon – Robie Creek.
What you say? Where have I been?
Not doing as much as I would like to knock off a few more pounds. As I mentioned in a previous post – Halloween was not good to me. Or should I say, I wasn’t good at Halloween.
Since then I have not taken off any weight.
The thing is I know what I need to do – just cut back a little in the eating department and I will be losing weight again. Just a little.
Getting back to the half marathon coming up – have not been doing what I did the last 3 years for Robie Creek of running slightly longer each weekend. Instead, have been running more in the Boise foothills instead. Last weekend, I did a couple 1:20 runs.
What I am noticing is that I am not getting the training I thought I would get. Why? the new dog. We picked up a pound hound – a black lab ten month old puppy around Christmas. Now, instead of one dogon the run, we have two. I find myself having to stop occassionally and yell for Buddy to get with the program and join us. Which means I stop running …
So, I went make to the tried-and-true. Run along the greenbelt – sans dogs – for a specific amount of time, out and back. Ran for 2:07 today. And I feel good. Yes, I was beat up in the end, but I am feeling good right now.
Or lack there of.
I am up a couple of pounds this month and up for the year.
And I know exactly why.
Halloween.
Kids brought candy home and I ate it. Ever since, I haven’t done anything special to get rid of those few pounds and as a result I am still carrying them around like they are part of the furniture.
