Really Rowing 4 Weight Loss

I really am trying to drop some poundage by rowing the ergometer, i.e. - the “torture machine”.

Here’s what what of the two ergometers at the local YMCA look like after I have taken a spin …

41:41.1 and 10,000 meters later, here’s what the results look like.

And my splits for each 2,000 meters.

Not Going Like I Want

My effort to continue losing weight is not going the weigh (pun intended) the way I would like.  I have been fairly good about keeping up my thirty day goal of exercising every day - almost.  There are a few days in the recent past, including today, that I didn’t get the exercise I committed to.  Have been working more than usual this past month and not making the time to take care of myself like I need to.

I guess the only thing I can do is acknowledge, reaffirm my commitment and move on.

10,000 Meters Maybe More

… reminds me of a song with the lyrics, “10,000 people maybe more”, or something along those lines.

I digress.

Busted out a 10,000 ergometer piece at the local YMCA.

41:55.2, 2:05.7 / 500 meters, 21 strokes per minute.

8:27.4 22 2:06.8 2000m
8:24.6 22 2:06.1 4000m
8:23.7 22 2:05.9 6000m
8:24.1 21 2:06.0 8000m
8:15.5 22 2:03.8 10000m

I think I am realizing (once again) that I actually have to do something if I want to lose any more weight.  Surprise!  And one of those things is exercising.

In the winter, I find it easiest to go to the Y to workout.  I have noticed that I get my most weight loss to occur when I exercise in the evening - especially after 8PM.

This is all anecdotal, but it seems to be a theme with me.  Even in the summer time when I go for an evening mountain bike ride and get home late … usually the next day I wake up an weight in a pound or less than the day before.

January 2008 looks like it is going to be one of those weight “maintenance” months - no real change in my weight for the month.

Robie Creek Training Again

That’s right, I’m back on the Robie Creek Half Marathon training wagon again.  And like last year, I have a half-baked training plan that basically has me adding 10 minutes each week to my long distance run.  For instance, yesterday I ran for 1:50, the week before 1:40, the week before that 1:30.

This year, I am going to break up that plan with a decent distance run in the hills.  Next week, I’ll plan on a hour plus long run in the Boise foothills.

The only wildcard in the whole operation is that my left knee hurts after these long runs.  Might be old (older) age kicking in or a old ski accident aggravating me.  Who knows.

I can tell that I haven’t gotten serious about losing weight yet this year.  My extra curricular eating activities have not been curbed.  When I say extra curricular, I mean the eating I do in between meals.  A little snack here and there - while my weight hasn’t really gone up, it certainly isn’t going down.  Time to start facing my demons and go on a cold turkey run - no in between meal snacks.

Garmin Forerunner 305 Graph

Here’s a run I did recently and my results from using the Garmin Forerunner 305.

This was a relatively short run I did down to the local track at Boise high school. I ran 3 x mile intervals. Don’t remember the exact times, but you can see that my heart rate increased relatively quick and slowed to a gradual increase to the end of the mile.

Then I came to an almost dead stop, jogged around for awhile before going again.

One of two things that is a little strange is the altitude change. There wasn’t nearly as much altitude change as indicated by the results. Not sure why it shows so much.

The other “oddity” is the change in speed. Again, not sure why it jumps around so much. Might have to do with the frequency of taking measurements. There is an option to increase the frequency, once every second, but I haven’t turned that feature on.
