Hiking With My Brothers

Spent a few days with my two younger brothers hiking the mountains south of Mt Rainer near Goat Rocks in Washington state. Good times.

Peter and I started at the Packwood trailhead and hoofed it up to Lost Lake the first night. It was about a 8+ mile hike that ended around 6:30 PM (we got a late start at 1:30PM). Any later and the sun would not have been out and keeping us warm. I was sweating like a dog from Packwood lake for the 2 very uphill miles that we did at that point. I should mention that the weather was outstanding - nothing like have great weather for hiking and camping.

The second day’s plan was to hike from Lost Lake to Packwood saddle (5.3 miles) then up to the Pacfic coast trail and across the snow fields of Old Snowy Mountain. Beautiful scenery along the PCT (as it is referred to). We saw a few mountain goats. What I find absolutely fascinating is seeing where rivers actually start. It was very apparent that the snow fields were melting into creeks.

Like most of our camping trips, not everything went as planned. In this case, as we were hiking at just about the highest evelation and crossing a steep rocky slope just prior to Old Snowy mountain, the sole on the hiking boots I was using ripped off to the end of the toe box.

I used Photoshop to draw a green line along the side of the mountain to give you some perspective on where we hiked and where my boots decided to give up the ghost. Old Snowy Mountain is the peak on the right side.
Here’s a closer picture.

At this point I made the executive decision to turn around and head back instead of continuing on to our planned rendevous spot with our youngest brother. Call me a wimp, I don’t care - I’ve got a family. It was five o’clock and I wasn’t interested in having any hiking issues while crossing a steep snow field late in the day.

Thank goodness for cell phones. We called our other brother and told him to meet us at Packwood lake. We meet up with him early Saturday afternoon and layed around on our sleeping mattresses talking about “things”.

Like I said, “good times” and we plan on doing a hike in Idaho for 2008.
