Your Own Mortality: Antonio Puerta

Not sure why this one touched me so much …

Antonio Puerta, a 22 year football (soccer) player, recently passed away.

Antonio José Puerta Pérez (26 November 1984 – 28 August 2007) was a Spanish international football midfielder. He played for Sevilla FC in La Liga. Affected with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, he died on 28 August 2007, three days after suffering a series of cardiac arrests during a league game against Getafe CF on 25 August 2007.

I think it has to do with him leaving behind a girlfriend that is seven months pregnant.

Antonio Puerta…Rest in Peace

RIP

Hiking With My Brothers

Spent a few days with my two younger brothers hiking the mountains south of Mt Rainer near Goat Rocks in Washington state. Good times.

Peter and I started at the Packwood trailhead and hoofed it up to Lost Lake the first night. It was about a 8+ mile hike that ended around 6:30 PM (we got a late start at 1:30PM). Any later and the sun would not have been out and keeping us warm. I was sweating like a dog from Packwood lake for the 2 very uphill miles that we did at that point. I should mention that the weather was outstanding - nothing like have great weather for hiking and camping.

The second day’s plan was to hike from Lost Lake to Packwood saddle (5.3 miles) then up to the Pacfic coast trail and across the snow fields of Old Snowy Mountain. Beautiful scenery along the PCT (as it is referred to). We saw a few mountain goats. What I find absolutely fascinating is seeing where rivers actually start. It was very apparent that the snow fields were melting into creeks.

Like most of our camping trips, not everything went as planned. In this case, as we were hiking at just about the highest evelation and crossing a steep rocky slope just prior to Old Snowy mountain, the sole on the hiking boots I was using ripped off to the end of the toe box.

I used Photoshop to draw a green line along the side of the mountain to give you some perspective on where we hiked and where my boots decided to give up the ghost. Old Snowy Mountain is the peak on the right side.
Here’s a closer picture.

At this point I made the executive decision to turn around and head back instead of continuing on to our planned rendevous spot with our youngest brother. Call me a wimp, I don’t care - I’ve got a family. It was five o’clock and I wasn’t interested in having any hiking issues while crossing a steep snow field late in the day.

Thank goodness for cell phones. We called our other brother and told him to meet us at Packwood lake. We meet up with him early Saturday afternoon and layed around on our sleeping mattresses talking about “things”.

Like I said, “good times” and we plan on doing a hike in Idaho for 2008.

Keeping Up The Pace

Yes, I have been exercising every day this month and no, I haven’t lost any weight this month.  Seems my weight loss efforts are in “hovering” mode.  What is it that had me losing 4 pounds a month for 5 months straight and now I can’t shake another pound off to save my life?

Am I at my ideal weight (~165 pounds)?  Have not been religious enough in my efforts to lose weight?  Do I need to actually go on a diet and restrict what I eat beyond not eating after dinner?  What?

I plan on being consistent in my exercise effort through the end of the month (even though I am going on a backpack trip around part of Mt Rainer in a couple of days).  I think it might be time to up the exercise effort - my preferred way of losing weight instead of dieting.  I have been considering purchasing a single speed bike for commuting purposes and this might be the justification to do so.  If I can only convince my wife …

15 Days Of Exercise

Still working on my thirty day goal of exercising every day of the month.  Barely made it today.  Sat myself down at the computer after dinner and before you knew it a hour went by just like that.

Got up, got dressed and went for a 45 minute run that included 1 x 400 meters in 1:38 and 1 x 1600 meters in 6:30 (3:16, 3:14).

Another 15+ days to go of exercising.  Yeah, go team!

Great Minds Think Alike

Dear reader,

If you are a repeat visitor of this online weight loss diary, then it should come as no surprise that I am a big fan of setting goals, in particular 30 day goals that get me off my duff and doing something.

This months goal is to exercise every single day.  I have also come to the conclusion - for me anyway - that a thirty day goal has to be something that I do every day for thirty day and not some goal that gives me thirty days to finish (I’ll just wait until the end and cram it all in).

So when I say great minds think alike, I mean the people over at lifehack.org think along the same lines as I do when spelling out 18 tricks to make new habits sticks.

Here’s the first two tricks mentioned.

1. Commit to Thirty Days - Three to four weeks is all the time you need to make a habit automatic. If you can make it through the initial conditioning phase, it becomes much easier to sustain. A month is a good block of time to commit to a change since it easily fits in your calendar.

2. Make it Daily - Consistency is critical if you want to make a habit stick. If you want to start exercising, go to the gym every day for your first thirty days. Going a couple times a week will make it harder to form the habit. Activities you do once every few days are trickier to lock in as habits.

Those ring true with me, how about you?
