My Version Of Restless Leg Syndrome

Went running today. Went for a long run, a very long run along the Boise Greenbelt. This training run was and will be the longest run I do for the Robie Creek Half Marathon coming up on April 21 2007. I ran for 2:29:28.41 - how’s that for detail (cough*anal retentive*cough)?

Awhile back I wrote about losing 2 pounds in 2 hours by running for 2 hours. I weighed in bofore and after today’s run and lost 4 pounds from my two and a half hour run, from 175.2 lbs. to 171.2 lbs. As I have mentioned before, this type of weight loss isn’t expected to “stick”. I can alomost guarantee that today’s weight loss won’t last long, I have already drank 30+ ounces of water and eaten a decent sized lunch.

Getting back to the title of this little blurb, restless leg syndrome. Often times after an extreme exercise effort like today’s long run, my muscles will twitch when I am just sitting down or at night when I am sleeping. My verison of RLS includes the calf muscle being “sucked” in when I touch in. It’s a wierd sentation when I touch the back of my calf muscle and my leg responses by pulling in the muscle. Like I said, this is my version of restless leg syndrome and not the official version which is actually a neurological disorder.

I Think I Know Why Crash Diets Don’t Work

Sex Life Improves With Writing

I didn’t see this one coming and I sure didn’t think I would be writing about this.

This story isn’t about losing weight per se. It does mention a method that I have used, successfully I might add, to lose weight.

The important point is here:

For example, researchers asked people to write essays in support of a random point of view they did not hold. Months later, when surveyed, the majority held the opinion they wrote about, regardless of the topic. Once a person commits an opinion to writing – even an opinion he does not hold – it soon becomes his actual opinion. Not every time, but MOST of the time. The people in these experiments weren’t exposed to new information before writing their contrived opinions. All they did was sit down and write an opinion they didn’t actually have, and months later it became their actual opinion. The experiment worked whether the volunteers were writing the pro or the con position on the random topic.

This is what I am doing with this blog, writing down my intentions and making them come true.

Another Long Weekend Run

Long time readers (all of 3.5 months) know that I am training for the Robie Creek half marathon coming up in April 2007.  My training has consistented mostly of short weekday runs and one long weekend run.

This past Sunday, I ran for 2:15:00 (actually, 2:14:57) and covered about 15 miles.  I felt better than when I ran for 2 hours a couple of weeks ago.  Make no mistake, I was tired after this run.  No doubt about it, I was whooped.  But unlike the last long distance run, I actually felt relatively good throughout that run.  I started to feel a little weak after running for 1:40, previously, I felt weak at the 1:00 mark.

Also, the weight loss is going well. I weighed into at 174.0.  This weekend showed a large fluctuation of weight - on Saturday, I weighed in at 172.8 lbs.  By Sunday, I weighed 175ish.  But who cares?

Body Mass Index, What Does It Mean For You?

You may have heard of Body Mass Index, or BMI. BMI is a way to take compare your weight relative to others regardless of your height. Think of it this way, would you expect a 5′ tall person to weigh more or less than a 6′ tall person? Hopefully, you said the taller person should weigh more.

So how do you measure your BMI? The BMI is a ratio of your weight-to-height. For people using the English method of measurements (pounds and inches), the BMI formula is:

(weight in pounds / (height in inches) x (height in inches)) x 703 OR (weight in pounds / (height in inches)^2) x 703

For the metric lovers of the world, the equation is a little simpler:

weight in kilograms / (height in meters) x (height is meters) OR weight in kilograms / (height in meters)^2

An example will show you how this works. I’m 5′ 10″ and today I weighed in at 172.8 lbs (new record low). Converting my height from feet/inches to strictly inches = 5 x 12 + 10 = 60 + 10 = 70 inches.

BMI = (172.8 / 70 x 70)) x 703 = (172.8 / 4900) x 703 = 24.79

You can do either the English or metric calculation by using this body mass index calculator.

So what does it mean? I’ll let the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explain the details. Suffice it to say, there are different ranges of BMI with anything less than 18.5 considered underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 considered normal (which is what category I am in for the first time in a long time), 25.0 to 29.9 overweight and 30.0 and above labeled obese.

BMI - another weigh (pun intended) to measure your overall health.

Ergometer Video

I don’t know what it is about the erg, but I can sit on it and row for a long time without getting bored.

Found a video on youtube that shows a high tech, fancy-pantsy setup.  Yes, it would be very cool if I had this type of ergometer setup at the YMCA, but alas I do not.

Whoever this person is, he is going a great job keeping up the pace around 1:50 per 500 meters.  I don’t think I can row at this pace for 2000 meters like he is (at least not yet).
