Lose Weight Every Day

To lose weight, you need to do something about it everyday.  Take me for example.  On Valentine’s Day I did nothing related to losing weight, really.  We shared a chocolate fondue for dessert with strawberries, pineapples and sponge cake (yummy).  No exercise, nothing.  Yesterday, instead of the whole fang dang family going to the local YMCA, just my youngest son and I went there and played basketball.  No real athletic output involved.  Though I do consider the time with my son more important than the erg workout that I was planning.

As a result, I weighed in at 181.8 lbs this morning.  Don’t forget that I have a new digital scale, hence the reason I am showing results out to the tenth of a pound.  Now I need to get back on the wagon and do something everyday to help lose weight.

I brought my workout clothes with me today so I can go for a run after work.  Sometimes it is to easy to drive home after work and “relax”, eat dinner then “relax” some more and before you know it you are “relaxing” yourself into not exercising.

A little over a week ago I setup a mini seven day goal of no desserts and no snacks, period.  I completed that goal successfully as of Valentine’s day.  Last night as I was munching on chips and reflecting on my successful completion of the mini goal, I couldn’t help but notice the irony of my behavior.  Here I was all proud and happy about my accomplishment and what was I doing to reward myself?  That’s right, snacking.

I’m not going back on the no snack/no dessert regime, but I am going to cut back on snacking specifically for the remainder of the month.  Dessert in moderation is fine, but seeing that I have no control in the snacking department, I need to cut myself off from the goods.

3 x 1 mile

Actually, 3 x 1600 meters.

Tonight I ran three times a mile down at the local high school’s track, Boise high school.

I don’t think I warmed up enough because I never felt very smooth running.  Each interval felt strained, had to take a deep breath every so often and didn’t feel like I was ever accelerating.

With that said, I was pleased with my times.  Each interval was progressively faster; 6:55, 6:45, and 6:36.

Taylor Body Fat Scale

I guess my wife loves me. I say this because she bought me a digital scale, a Taylor 5578 bodyfat scale to be specific. The scale is a Valentine’s present - actually a pre-Valentine’s day present since my 11 year old teenage son dropped enough hints for me to put two and two together.

It is a nifty little scale. Of course, it measures your weight and does so to the nearest tenth of a pound. Expect the results I post going forward to have numbers that resolve down to the tenth of a pound. I don’t know exactly how it does all the magic to report your weight, body fat and % of weight consisting of water, but it does. It does mention that your feet should be damp. I’ll quote how the body fat is measured:

This instrument uses BIA (Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis). BIA is one of the most accurate methods of measuring body fat. It simply sends a harmless signal through the fat and muscle in your body. This method calculates both your personal weight and body fat simultaneously, thus giving you a more accurate reading of your overall health and fitness.

To get that level of detail, you need to program in your height (to the nearest tenth of an inch), your age, your sex, and whether you are a “normal” person or an “athletic” person. For what it is worth, the manual that comes with the digital scale considers a person athletic if they do 10 hours or more per week of aerobic activity and has a resting heart rate of 60 beats per minute.

In the presence of the family, I stepped up on the scale and weighed 181.6 pounds. This was taken just after dinner with my running clothes on, sans shoes and socks. I’m not so sure I believe the report back that 21% of my weight is fat. The other number was 57% of my weight consisting of water. I’ll do what I always do in the morning and weigh myself with very little clothing and see if that body fat percentage changes.

Anyway, my wife orginally planned on putting the scale out before she goes to bed tonight and leaving a few pieces of candy on the scale. I guess she was planning on teasing me.

Back Pain - What A Pain

Seems that I forgot about my age.

That’s right, I’m no spring chicken. But, at age 40, I don’t feel that old. I have to tell you that my body decided to tell me that things aren’t the way they use to be. Come on though, isn’t 40 the new 20?

Recall, that I am training for the Robie Creek half marathon coming up in April, just a couple of months from now. Today, I went for an out and back run, 45:00 minutes out, and 46:46 back. The way back was tough. Thank goodness the whole run was flat. I ran along the Boise river greenbelt. As the run progressed I started to trip on my own feet as I could barely lift them up. I probably ran about 10 miles. Next week I will run 1:45:00, then 2:00:00 the following week. This is the same training I did for last year’s half marathon race. This time I am planning a run that covers the uphill portion of the race. The first 8 miles of the race are uphill and the rest are downhill. There is a good reason why the Robie Creek half marathon is referred to as the toughest half marathon in the northwest.

Weigh in today was at 181. Yes, I still have the good old analog scale, the one I adjust every time I weight myself. I’m still chugging 64 ounces of water a day and I have a mini seven day goal of no dessert and no snacks. The mini goal ends right on Valentine’s day.

Getting back to the run today … I need to stretch. My flexibility is limited to say the least. I can’t easily touch my toes when I bend over. Poor flexibility seems to run in my father’s side of the family. Seems I got hosed in that gene pool. My wife and I discussed and decided to start taking yoga at the Y. I have never taken a yoga class. My wife on the other hand, used to be involved in yoga quite a bit, B.C. (before children).

Since I am complaining about my fitness, hear me out. I replaced the bathroom sink this weekend. There’s a back breaking sport for you. I woke up this morning with a tight, a very tight lower back. On the right hand side of my back I had a sharp pain that would shot a jolt of pain if I put myself in an odd position. Of course, I wasn’t going to let a little pain get in the way of my first official weekend training run for Robie Creek. No sirree. I rubbed some Tiger Balm on my back, stretched a little then took off running. When I came back from running, I took a nice long hot back. Soaked in the tube and let the heat do some work on my lower back pain. Ate lunch, then sat down on the coach and turned on the heating pad. All of that seemed to help some. I can still feel a little nagging pain. If my back doesn’t feel 100% better tomorrow, I think I am going to spend some quality time stretching in the evening instead of either running or using the rowing machine.

You know that my thirty day goal this month is to drink 64 oz of water every day (I guess it’s only 28 days this month). There have been a few adjustments issues, but all in all, I am settling into the routine.

What you also know is that I have no idea why this is a good idea, my only thought is that I will feel bloated and not feel like eating so much. This has been true so far.
