Stomach Crunches And Sit Ups - Make It Hurt

Time for some sit ups.  My 30 day goal for March 2007 is 100 sit ups per day, minimum.  I plan on doing a variety of sit ups to strengthen the abdominal muscles.  The crunch being one of them.

A stomach crunch is done by lying flat on your back with your knees bent then curling up the shoulders towards your hips.  What I won’t be doing is putting my hands behind my neck to help with crunches.  There is the possibility of injuring yourself if you start jerking around your head, especially as you get further along in a sit up set you get tired.  I plan on crossing my hands across my chest.  One other tip is to look at the ceiling and not at your knees.  For variety, I’ll likely add some kind of weight on my chest occasionally.  If I really wanted to get fancy, I would use a medicine ball.  I should clarify that unlike the traditionally sit up, the stomach crunch keeps the back on the floor throughout the entire exercise.  The crunch focuses on the rectus abdominis, while the sit up also uses the lower back and hip flexors.

I’m also planning on throwing in some twists that strengthen the abdominal oblique muscles when doing sit ups.  A little twist on the way up gives the body a chance to work those muscles on the side that might not otherwise get strengthened.

Just to be clear here, there are no plans to buy any kind of hardware to help with strengthening my stomach muscles.  No abulator type machine for me.

Another stomach strengthening type exercise I plan on doing is (I have no idea what this is called) sitting on my butt, legs and upper body off the group and thrusting my legs to one side while the upper body goes in the opposite direction as I compress my body.  Sounds confusing as all get out.  But I know from B.C. (before children) that this is a solid workout for the tummy.

Another exercise that falls in the sit up category is to lie on the floor, knees bent 90 degrees, feet flat on the ground and arms on the side of body, then pull knees up to chest, repeat.

If I’m feeling really motivated, I’ll get my kids involved.  I’ll have my nine year old son sit on my feet while I do the conventional sit up.  He’ll probably try to make me laugh, I’ll laugh and won’t be able to complete the sit up and will have to struggle to complete the remainder of the sit ups.

There will be other sit up type exercises that I will think up along the way.  The goal is to do 100 sit ups per day, at least.  If I get the urge, I’ll also through in some pushups too.

No Exercise And Losing Weight

That is what has been happening; I have not been exercising and have continued to lose weight.  Not sure I can explain what is going on, but as of today I am 178.2 pounds per the digital scale that currently resides on our bathroom floor.

The no-exercise routine is not by choice.  About a week ago, I started to pick up the flu my wife had.  I had a cough and was starting to spike a temperature.  I went to the doctor within the first twenty hour hours and received a prescription that helped a lot.  Also last week, we moved.  Moving from one house to another doesn’t leave much time for anything else.  To top it off, I strained a muscle on the left hand side of my back - I was pretty much worthless for moving this past weekend.  Talk about bad timing.

But still, I have lost weight and have not been exercising religiously as I was previously doing.  I can speculate that the change in my routine is what did it.  But one other thing to consider is that I seemed to have leveled out on my weight loss effort.  I really wasn’t losing any weight this month until just recently; maybe my body was adjusted to the current weight.  Since I have continued with the good habits I have established using 30 day goals - like no candy bars, no eating after dinner, exercise every day (haven’t followed this very well recently), 64 ounces of water; maybe by body just continued on with where it was already going.  As you can plainly see, I don’t know why I am still losing weight, but I’ll take it.

All of this talk reminds me that I need to think of another thirty day goal for the month of March.

Being Sick And Losing Weight

Nothing like being sick to put a damper on your weight loss efforts.  I picked up the flu last night that my wife brought home a few days before and I have felt achy all day.

I took my wife to the doctor after she was sick for two days. After all of the testing and prodding, the doctor told here that there wasn’t much to be done other than treat the symptoms.  If she would have come in within twenty four hours of the first symptoms she could of had some medicine that would have helped.

This morning, with the encouragement from my wife, I went over to the health clinic to get checked out.  I felt a little silly, read not-macho, for going to the doctor when I didn’t really feel that bad.  It’s not like I felt like I was on my death bed or anything like that.  I started the medicine cocktail going as soon as I got up - Tylenol, then Advil a couple of hours later and have cycled through that combination a couple of times so far today.

During my visit with the doctor today, I received the medicine that my wife would have liked, amantadine.  My understanding is that this medicine would cut down the time that I will have the flu.  Amyway, I’m feeling pretty good right now, my temperature is down and I don’t feel that achy.  I’m under no illusion that I am all better yet.  I bet if I cut back on the Tylenol, Advil, amantadine combination I am on, that I won’t feel all that great.

Unlike my wife’s flu experience, I have had a healthy appetite today.  I didn’t feel like skipping a meal or “tossing my cookies”. No jello for me either, I have been eating today like any other day.  Hopefully, I will get a good night’s sleep and be ready to get up and go early tomorrow.

Let me throw out the caveats here … I’m not a doctor, repeat after me, “I am not a doctor”.  Don’t even think of using any of this information I am providing here as a substitute for a professional health care provider.  I’m just telling you what is going on in my life right now.  It just so happens that I am sick and am taking medicine to deal with my sickness.  My preference would be to not take any medicine and just “suck up it” like a man.  Well, that type of thinking is what keeps people sick for longer than they need to be.  My wife had to a do a bunch of “persuading” to get me to go to the doctor this morning - and I am glad that I did.

Robie Creek Half Marathon

If you are like me, you tried to register online for the 2007 Robie Creek half marathon.  And if you are like me, you haven’t been able to do so.  Frustrating to say the least when the web site setup to register participants for the race can’t handle the number of visitors.  Hitting the “refresh” button isn’t helping the cause either.

Have you been able to get through to register yet?  Leave a comment.

Long Run For Weight Loss

Big running day today.  I’m sure I lost some weight from today’s run.

I’m training for the Robie Creek half marathon that occurs in April each year.  Today’s run was supposed to be a 1 hour 45 minute run.  I did an out and back.  I went out for 52:30 and back in 50:00 for a total time of 1:42:30.  I started out much slower than I did for last week’s run.  I remembered how I felt last week - it didn’t help that my back was in pain last week - so I made an effort to start out relatively slow this week.  Next week’s 2 hour run I will try and have a more even pace.

And even though I felt wiped out today, I didn’t spend a lot of time lying around today.  My wife has the flu and needed some well deserved attention. I don’t know about you, but when my wife is not feeling well, I want to help her.  Tomorrow, I am going into work late and leaving early.
